So there I was the other day, standing at the bus stop after a gym session and up comes this mad old preacher woman. She's a bit of a regular about town.

Anyway she avoids me probably because she thinks i'm a devil worshiper or something, which as I don't believe in god I can't be (but that's another story).

Anyway she's trying to convince this other guy about Christianity and her whole argument goes something like this.

Have you read the bible? You should and find out about Jesus! Which she repeats over and over again. I mean what is with these people can't they formulate a rational reasoning as to why apart from telling everyone that they should just read the damn bible?

Good question boonster.

I guess I have been trying to find that out. I was brought up in a good catholic household, but in the end I just disn't believe in the heaven and hell business. I have looked into other belief systems, but then big problem with all of them is faith.

Whenever you reach the grey area all religions rely on blind faith to cover over any unsubstainated claims, and so over the years I have moved to a more athiest view point, although I still would like to think that there is something after death.

Maybe one should embrace the worm food theory. I mean there's nothing wrong with believing that we have only one life, so make the best of it.

I have no wish to denigrate anyones religious beliefs but if you are going to preach them, just make sure that you have all the answers that's all i'm saying.

How come it's not o.k. for people to push their religion on you but all of a sudden it's o.k. for people to push their diet and or excersize habits on you? Darwin said whaaatt? That doesn't line up with the Scientific Method now, does it? I do believe that Darwin sure did look like a monkey. It's on him to prove his hypothesis not the other way around. Some believers actually can prove to you that Jesus was who he said he was, but they won't push it on you usually you have to ask. If I believed Darwin's Theory of Evolution I would be an Exterminator. My monkey kinda better than your monkey kins. Kinda like a Nazi maybe? I know I gain peace, patience and understanding from prayer, reading, and trusting that God is a gentleman and allows me to do whatever I want to, yet never renegotiating with me. The contract cannot be broken and I get to be with him and truly be loved. Simple proof to me is in nature. But then again I am not a Churchie-make believer. I don't go to church because most of them are Satanic. Ironic, huh? My advise to you is stay clear of scriptures if you don't want to be held accountable, and don't want to see human history and how f'd up we are and how mean. I am curious though, so I'll ask you, do you believe in Spirit? (Besides booze, haha!) Does afterlife pose a possiblility to you? If death is just peace and quiet and silence and rotting bodies with no conscience then does it matter if you hurt or kill others? I just watched, "Afterlife", last night. Good movie! Peace and Love to you. I guess those are God to me, Peace and Love.

Well Walter there is an element of truth in what you say, but it's often because those that preach do so in such an ineloquent fashion that it provokes that response.

Also society is becoming a lot more secular in nature and thus many people don't wish to be preached at by any religion.

To be honest HTPN I couldn't be bothered to intervene, because I have found that in many cases it turns into a pointless conversation as pointing out inconsistencies in what they are saying makes absolutely no difference whatsoever, and i'm not really a confrontational person.

I remember an old friend used to enjoy arguing for the sake of it and would often take a diametrically opposing point just to argue. This always annoyed me because he didn't believe in what he was arguing about, and I suppose at the end of the day if the subject matter is something you really believe in you hope that the other person might change their mind.

Going back to the whole religion thing, I think that Dawkins hit the nail on the head when he said, if they (religious people) came up with concrete scientific proof that he was wrong then he would admit he was wrong, but as they can't he hasn't as yet.

They could tell you all about it. But the human nature is not willing to listen or even allow anything about Jesus to enter in.
People can talk about anything but when somebody brings up Jesus people get on the defencive because It is not allowed.
Our nature goes so far against Jesus that once you hear the name it draws animosity.

Sounds like you missed an opportunity to engage her and draw her out of the cyclic conversation she was having.

She really didn't give herself a chance to elaborate a bit more and explain her rationale.

Holy crap! We have blog signatures?!?
